Choreography Journal: Professional Advice

At a recent event, David and I took the opportunity to show our new routine-so-far to a pro whom we respect as a choreographer, technician and “musicologist”. It was a great experience! Because our choreography is not complete, we were able to show the pro what our concept is and the type of structure and execution we have in mind. We were able to receive both specific and general feedback — since the routine was still raw, it’s possible to change anything! We were also able to get guidance on choreographing the third and most challenging portion of the routine.
We were pleased that our existing choreography was not changed or re-done — rather, the pro showed us how he would tweak it for improvement. The process encouraged us to stay on track and gave us confidence that someone whom we really respect believes that we have the skill and partnership to pull off this routine. It gives us new ways to think about both the dance we’re doing (WCS) and the choices we make. We also come away from the session understanding the risks we are taking in terms of potential acceptance and/or rejection in competition.
We are excited and exhilarated to continue working on our new piece!
